Research Interests:
My primary interest is the study of personal relationships and their influence on health-related outcomes among children and adolescents, particularly in Latino populations. In two related longitudinal studies, I examined how family relationships influence adolescents’ health risk behaviors, violence and victimization. I am currently completing a study funded by NIAID to investigate the impact of sexual relationship dynamics on condom use among Latino adolescent couples. In this research, I am using both quantitative and qualitative methods to assess sexual relationship issues, such as each partner’s relative power in the relationship, which condom negotiation strategies are effective, and the cultural factors that may influence relationship dynamics. I have recently received funding from NHLBI to examine parental influences on obesity among Mexican American children, particularly focusing on parents’ child-feeding practices that may be linked to weight gain in children. In all my research, I engage in extensive qualitative work, including focus groups and qualitative interviews, to develop measures and to assure the cultural appropriateness of measures. I have also acted as methodological consultant on numerous studies, advising colleagues on research designs, hypothesis generation, methodology, and statistical model selection.
